You’re Not As Unique As You Think You Are.
Well over a decade ago, I was in a room with a web consultant talking about the needs, wants and desires for our company’s website. We put on a wonderful presentation with details about our shopping cart, sales funnel, web pages and contact info.
Once we wrapped up, we went around the room to us various officers in the company, and we ended up at the web consultant.
He spoke a phrase that has stuck with me ever since that day, because he was right… “your website isn’t as unique as you think.”
Our marketing team was in shock. They had put weeks into finding the right mix of aggressive sales tactics and subtle follow up emails, profitable rebill features, and great information.
We were unique. But we weren’t. The consultant went on to explain that there were dozens, hundreds probably, websites with most ,if not all, if not MORE, of the features we were talking about. We just needed to emulate the ones we liked that odds were that we would have the site we wanted, all without having to develop from scratch and basically using off-the-shelf code.
He was right, and I promote this to nearly all of my clients. Your website isn’t what makes you unique, it’s the product, service and culture.
On this podcast I talk more about why WordPress can make parts of your website unique by using plugins, themes and CSS code that works universally in the WordPress architecture while making the site work on existing code.
WordPress Is The Most Popular CMS
It’s been reported that WordPress is by far the biggest content management system on the internet… by far. It’s possible to create a very modern looking website, but using “off-the-shelf” plugins and themes.
- WordPress is now attributed to 64.9% of all websites using a CMS (content management system). This includes Drupal, Joomla, Wix, Squarespace, etc.
- Of the ENTIRE internet, WordPress has 41.7% of the websites on the web. That’s a HUGE marketshare of anything.
And some of the big websites using WordPress are:
- TechCrunch
- Microsoft News
- Skype
- BBC America
- Vogue
So in reality, you may think your website is totally unique, but most likely it can be built with plugins, themes, and CSS code already developed.
Hosting
There are some basic needs for most WordPress websites.
- PHP 5.4 or better
- Maria or MySQL databases
- Apache
- HTTPS support
Plugins
- The WP repository have over 58,000 plugins in the site, and there are thousands more not included in the repository for various reasons.
- There’s plugin for just about everything including security, media, photo galleries, calendars, language switchers, sports scores and standings, and much, much more.
- The internet is LOADED with resources to find the right plugin.
- Podcasts
- Social Media Groups
- Internet Forums
- Sites like mine.
Themes
- There are over 11,000 themes available for WordPress… from just Theme Forest! That’s one place.
- There are countless number of themes beyond that, not to mention child themes, layouts, and other display options.
So to wrap things up, I’m not telling you that your site is not special. It is. It gives you a chance to tell your story, sell your products and services, and interact with your customers. But before you spend weeks or more trying to craft the perfect site, remember that the site can really be sped up and do all the things you want, just by finding plugins and themes that meet your expectations.
